We Came as Romans We Came as Romans Is a heavy metal,punk band trying to spread a positive message about love and life through music. Life is hard; its a struggle, and as we grow we experience many events that can lead us down the wrong path. The meaning behind this band Is to love and love one another, dont let life keep you down, and to move on, growing from our experiences. Their original members are from Troy, Michigan, and were part of a previous band, created before We Came as Romans.Most heavy bands are about the music, crazy guitar and drum solos and lots of screaming about yards that dont mean anything. We Came as Romans is all about the lyrics and the spreading of a positive message, music comes second: this Is one thing I really love about this band. This past year of my life has been really hard for me and when I started listening to We Came as Romans I was experiencing an extreme low. Before We Came as Romans, Sean N. Zelda, David Stephens, Johnny Nabobs, Mark Matt, and Joshua Moore created a band called This Emergency in August 2005. Only having a couple of shows in the Detroit area the band parted ways In November of the same year. Zelda left for the university of Michigan and Nabobs left the band for his own reasons. Later in 2006 their close friend joined the band as a vocalist and teamed up with Matt, changing the bands name to We Came as Romans. The new members who Joined the band are Eric Choc on drums, Lou Cotton on rhythm guitar, Andrew Glass on bass guitar, Kyle Avon on clean vocals and key board, on the lead attar Joshua Moor, of course, and following with David Stephens on unclean vocals. After getting the rest of the band members up to par, the Demonstrations PEP (extended play) came out. YWCA had one tour and wasnt doing that great. Later in December of 2008 another PEP came out called Dreams. The PEP had four songs: Conditions, Shapes, Intentions, and Dreams. Short and sweet, but lasting and fulfilling.We Came As Romans new PEP, Dreams is less raw, synthesizer, and catchier. This PEP is only four songs long, but lasts approximately 15 minutes in length. Four out of the five [people] who reviewed the PEP thought it was well written (Sputnik). This PEP started the career for We Came as Romans. There have been two albums and one single released since Dreams: To Plant a Seed in November 2009 and Understanding What Weve Grown to Be in September 2011. To Plant a Seed had the message of To love others and to love in general said by Joshua Moore, one of the mall songwriters.These positive messages of love and brotherhood set the stage for the bands overall themes. In their latest album their tone is much darker and describes the challenges of growing up. Both albums had great reviews: 10 out of 10 for lyrics. We Came as Romans fans are more than happy with the release of their new album. Now they have toured the country and all around the world, from across America, to all over Europe, Canada, Australia and even Japan. Brotherhood is the comradely of love. To Plant a Seed talks a great deal about love and brotherhood. The meaning f brotherhood is essentially any close group of friends that hold each other close and last through thick and thin. Close friends are very important. They can help you get through almost anything and support you in any circumstance. Some may think that they are a Christian band, but, in fact, they are Just a normal band sending a loving message.It is hard to find a band that is not Christian but sends a positive message. Life has never been easy, and for most people it continually gets tougher. Music is a way for people to connect to what other people are feeling, whether it be depression, happiness, or anything else. We Came as Romans created this band to share their loving message about life and friends. The music comes second after the lyrics but is still a big part of We Came as Romans. The instruments used are a drum set, a bass, two guitars, a keyboard and two singers; one with a deep heavy scream and one with a higher pitch.Usually on a drum set there is only one mini splash symbol above the regular splash symbol but on Eries drum set, he uses 4 to 5 of them for extra sounds. Eric Choc has some great beats, but a generic sound through his use of the double bass pedal to keep along with the rhythm guitar player. The bassist does the same for any other band, keeps the beat and the bass line for the song. One thing that is unique about this band is that they are a heavy metal/punk band but have no crazy guitar solos. The standard tuning for a guitar is E,A,D,G,B,E, the tuning that Lou and Joshua use are drop D and drop C tuning. Drop D is Just changing the first E string to D tuning but drop C is C, G, C, F, A, D, and this creates a much lower sound than the standard tuning. The guitar playing is mostly power and bar chords and strumming on the open E string. There is some single string playing with scales, hammer ones and pull offs but nothing too eccentric. For the most part both guitars are distorted with some use of clean sounds. Kyle Pantone, one of the vocalists, also plays keyboard in a way that adds a uniqueness to the band. The keyboard is used throughout each album; mostly for intros and breakdowns using synthesizers, xylophone sounds, and light techno beats.The vocalists go hand in hand with each other. There is David who sings the heavy screaming and Kyle who sings high pitched. Each song has a harmonious balance of screaming and singing. Some songs are telling a story and both of the vocalists seem eke they are talking back to each other, ultimately making the music fantastic. Overall the music has a noshing beat style, with keyboard effects, basic guitar and bass lines, and dual core vocals to wrap it all together. We Came as Romans has constantly plucked the string of positive energy, with powerful and inspiring lyrics. To Plant a Seed was their first album but also one of their most popular songs. To Plant a Seed tells a story about how they have planted a seed for their future and how they grew together into each of their lives. Weve planted a seed, an ever growing wonder to a beautiful tree, grow Each branch outstretched and different from the last The right ones have grown in to fill in the gaps and all are equal in love and trust, and all are a part of something so much need; strives for the perfect balance to show love and show compassion. My future started with the first note that I ever played, the first note that was ever sang. These are lyrics from To Plant a Seed. As you read, it is a story about how they came to be. Dreams was another popular song from their second PEP. This is my deepest dream, this is how I show you my love Lam here struggling with my brothers, this is the most passion you will ever see But after all of whats between, you still chose yourself over me know that you are forever my brother, here I struggle with you my brother. .. He tells me that love endures all things Beloved let us love one another. Dreams tells a story about brotherhood and all the things that both the band and all friends struggle with, but they are still brothers and are there for each other. Mis Understanding is another popular song from their second album that was released before the album was out. Mis Understanding tells a story about how they cannot understand things now, after all the love and compassion they have shown the world. Am I not understanding this now? This world Eve held so close to my heart is all against me now.. . I tried compassion and to love every other, Eve tried forgiveness and to hold on to my brothers. Look at where its left us. .. This happens all the time in life. You do something retreat, and the worst possible thing happens and you are so confused and angry at the world. During Christmas of 2010 1 found out that my parents of 32 years were getting divorced and my on and off girlfriend of 2 years cheated on me with one my best friends. They kept this a secret for 7 months. Not only was I torn apart from my parents and my girlfriend, I had to pay for school myself last year and my two closest friends had to eave for college and the military. I was completely stressed and depressed for most of last year. I can look back and see it was the hardest time in my life. Before my buddy, Peter, left to go back to the Navy he introduced some new bands to me, Attack Attack, Asking Alexandria, The Devil Wears Pravda, and We Came as Romans. My way of feeling better was chain smoking and listening to heavy metal, not the greatest thing but when I started listening to the actual lyrics by We Came as Romans, I fell in love with them. So many of their songs were incorporated into my life and helped me et through one of the hardest times in my life. To Move on is to GroW was a single that was released between their first and second album and it is my favorite song by Nee Came as Romans.I grew a lot in the past year, after all the experiences I had to deal with by myself. I loved this song so much I recently got my first tattoo saying To Move on is to Grow. I see this is true not only for the experiences for the past year but for more to come. Moving on from anything traumatic in your life makes you grow, sometimes for the better or for worse. I have never felt so connected to a band before. Even if I move on to something new, Ill know that We Came as Romans was there for me when I needed them most. Bout lifes difficulties and to love everyone. The band was created in 2005 and the original band members are from Troy, Michigan. We Came as Romans had difficulty Nee they first started and lost some members due to college. Joshua Moore, one of the original members who is also the main songwriter, was inspired by love for one another and decided that was going to be the main message to get across. Before you can collect your bag and use your superb (non-secret) interview handshake to close things out, though, thereââ¬â¢s one more question: ââ¬Å"Do you have any questions for me?â⬠Hereââ¬â¢s why questions to ask during an interview are really important. If youââ¬â¢re not prepared, this is a chance for that unappealing deer-in-headlights moment. This makes us feel a lot of sympathy towards Gregory and we feel sorry for him. There seems to be a close link between Gregory life and his Mother life. No matter what happens, they try to make the best of things and get on with it. Preston maintains and feeds his hatred of Gregory instead of repressing it; he cherished his feeling of alienation he had from Gregory. He lived the save type of life as her, one of suffering and one full of sorrow, death seems like a better place for him he is along side the one and only person who loved him. Preston holds a grudge on Gregory right from the very start. But we must admire Gregory for not begrudging him or any other person who treats him badly even if they have just been nasty to him, he would do a kind turn for anyone, even if they had been scolding him. He is parallel to his mother. This helps us to warm to him as a character. Gregory is stoical and endures things with uncomplaining patience whichs helps us to admire him. Gaskell creates a character that speaks highly of Gregory. Nearly every one of the farm workers has a bad thing to say about him apart from old Adam. Gregory is sent out onto the hills as a Shepard with along with Adam who trains him. Adam is the only person apart from Gregorys mother who has not got a bad word to say about him, but indeed praises him. This is likely to the fact that Adam was almost the first person who had a good opinion of Gregory and even told this to his boss, Preston. Later in the story when the narrator goes missing, Gregory goes out in the thick snow to look for his half brother risking in his own life and not even thinking about it. This also seems parallel to Helen who had done similar for Gregory by putting Gregory first and looking out for him without even thinking about it. When Gregory manages to find the narrator, Gaskell makes us feel even more admiration for him. In the freezing snow, he gives his brother the Maud (woollen shawl) that he is wearing so that the narrator can stay just a little bit warmer. This makes us warm to Gregory, because of the fact he is suffering for the sake of his brother. Gaskell evokes admiration from the readers, Gregory died for his brother, and someone he barely knew and did not even complain about it. Gaskell creates a character that many of the readers may take a disliking to and manages to get ambivalent responses from the readers. Preston is described as being an old bachelor long past forty and one of the wealthiest farmers thereabouts. Helen agrees to marry him solely on that the fact that he promised to take good charge of her boy, and let him want for nothing, neither in way of keep nor in education. This almost seems a purely business agreement. He uses Gregory as an excuse in order to marry Helen. Gaskell makes our response to Preston more complex than any other of the characters; she manages to get a complicated reaction to Preston through a short story. With the other main characters, it is obvious how Gaskell is trying to portray them but it is not obvious in Prestons case. We are suspicious of him at the start. At the start of The Half Brothers Preston is made out to be a horrible man, but by the end of the story our feelings have softened against him. He is very impatient, he does not wait for Helen to love him Perhaps love would have come in time. Preston begrudges Gregory as child for the attention he receives from Helen. He is jealous of him, and cannot stand Helen loving Gregory more than him. Preston is dehumanised. He does not love Gregory at all, but hates him. But later on we see that Preston is humanised, glad and proud his son was born. He becomes sorry for his poor wifes state, but still blames it on Gregory and holds him responsible for Helens death even though it is his own fault for arguing with her. After Helens death Preston honours the agreement for which they were married under, to look after Gregory. But he makes no attempt to love him, only to give him material things that money can buy, nothing emotional. Even Preston is hurting Gregorys dog, just because it belongs to Gregory, he has a real dislike to anything that Gregory owns or anything to do with. Even Prestons own son thinks he is to hard on Gregory I believe that my father cherished his feeling of alienation to my brother as a duty, than strove to repress it But towards the end of The Half brothers Gaskell makes us feel differently towards him. There is a sense of deep regret from Preston on his deathbed about the way that he treated Gregory throughout his life God forgive me my hardness of heart towards the fatherless child! After his death he knows that Helen loved Gregory more and so as a sign of repentance had desired that he might lie at the foot of the grave, in which, by his desire, poor Gregory had been laid with our mother. Preston is very grateful and thankful to Gregory for saving his sons life I would have given him half my land I would have blessed him as my son. He even tries to be kind to the dog, but it wont let him near it. Gaskell is very good at creating and holding suspense for long periods of time through the story. At the start of the story, just after Helens husband dies suspense starts to build up as we become worried about Helens future and continues to hold the suspense until she marries Preston. When the narrators gets lost, the fact that night came on quicker makes us feel unnerved that night is overtaking him and that he may get stuck there all night. An eerie atmosphere is created which intensifies the suspense even further some wild boggy moor Tautology is used to emphasis how dark it and adds to the suspense noiseless expansion of black darkness. Gaskells use of language also helps to create suspense. Suddenly the air was filled , suddenly is placed at the beginning of the sentence to show how quickly and unexpectedly the snow fell. We start to become worried for the narrator and the suspense is built up even further by the emotional language used I shouted terrible, wild shouts for bare life and choked with tears desolate, helpless death I was to die shows how extreme the situation is, how isolated and lonely the narrator must have felt. The narrator starts to give up hope and we start to feel very sorry for him and then just as all hope is gone, lassie comes to his rescue, we now see that he saved and is going to get home safely as he has been found. Just as soon as we feel relief that he has been found, there poses as even bigger problem, instead of one person being lost, there are two the suspense is deepened even further than before. As the two try to find their way home, it is apparent that they are not going to get home and could die out there. All of this creates suspense and makes the reader want to read on to see if the pair gets home all right. The suspense reaches it climax near the end of the story. When the narrator determined to sleep and doesnt care if he dies. When the pair realise that they can go no further, they stop as a last resort they know that they are going to die and sent lassie back to get help. The suspense is mounted to see whether or not lassie can get back to the ranch before the pair die of the cold. Then the narrator fell asleep. We think is the end, he has fallen asleep he will die. But then a sense of relief comes over us when we find that the narrator has been found just time and survives, but Gregory is not so lucky. Through out the story The Half Brothers Gaskell evokes and manipulates many of our feelings. But some readers, including myself find that some of the story mawkish and trying to push at our emotional buttons in an unsophisticated way. Gaskell style of writing helps to manipulate our feelings. The way she portrays Helens and Gregorys lives makes us feel a lot of sympathy towards them but we admire the way they put up with everything without complaining. She creates a character, which seems to be the bad guy of the story and evokes complex feelings for him from us. Some readers including myself may find that Preston is an horrid man and continue to think the same even when Gaskell tries to soften his image by saying that he has become humanised, but others may feel that he is a good man at heart and this is portrayed at the end of the story when he is deeply regretful. Gaskell is very good at creating suspense and makes us worried about the characters and makes us want to read on. So overall Gaskell is very good at manipulating our feelings.

The Struggling Boy The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is an enthralling and captivating novel about a boy and his struggle with life. The teenage boy ,Holden, is in turmoil with school, loneliness, and finding his place in the world. The author J.D. Salinger examines the many sides of behavior and moral dilemma of many characters throughout the novel. The author develops three distinct character types for Holden the confused and struggling teenage boy, Ackley, a peculiar boy without many friends, and Phoebe, a funny and kindhearted young girl. In the novel one distinctive type is the loner; the character type which Holden Caufield portrayed. Holden's loneliness and confusion puts him in a depression that he can't escape. Holden thinks to himself "It made you depressed, and every once in a while you got goose flesh. It didn't seem at all like Christmas was coming soon. It didn't seem like anything was coming."(pg.118) Another trait that was portrayed throughout the novel was peculiarity. The teenage boy Ackley who lives across the hall from Holden is very strange and has few friends. Ackley was very dirty, never brushed his teeth, and almost always stayed alone in his room. Holden says " His teeth were always mossy- looking, and he was dirty as hell, but he always had clean fingernails."(pg.22) Innocence and kindheartedness is displayed in the novel through Holden's young sister, Phoebe. Whenever Holden is depressed about being alone he thinks of memories with his younger sister Phoebe and feels completely better. Phoebe is always there for her brother to listen to his stories and complaints.

Full Day Kindergarten Essay
Full day kindergarten should be mandatory and of no extra cost for all of the elementary schools. This will boost the childrenââ¬â¢s academic achievement. The children that are exposed to full day kindergarten will learn more in literacy and mathematics than those in half-day kindergarten. The students that are in a full day program get to spend more time on their math, writing, and reading activities. The full day students also get the advantage of being able to participate in gym, art, and music classes. The half-day students do not get to experience gym, art, or music class. I have seen results first hand because I chose to put my son in a full day kindergarten versus the half-day. I chose to bring my son to a school that is located in Fridley so that he could receive the benefits of the full day kindergarten. The half-day program that Blaine offers has a very undesirable schedule for parents who work. The half-day schedule for Blaine elementary school is full days Mondays, Wednesdays, and every other Friday. I think that the earlier the educational intervention begins the higher the impact and the more likely the effects will be retained. Other than the health of a child, I think that nothing should be more important than their education. Giving children the opportunity to be in a full day kindergarten program gives them opportunities that the half-day students do not receive. One of the opportunities is being able to spend more time on reading, writing, and math. The teachers also have more time to sit one on one with each student one or in small groups and work on these skills. They also have a different theme for each month that they focus on. Some examples of the themes are the solar system, U. S.presidents, maps, and the celebrations around the world. Children also absorb things more easily when they are younger. Being a mother of a full day kindergarten student, I see the results of the extra reading, writing, and math that the teacher does with him. My son is one of the youngest in his class and he is reading at a first grade level. As for his writing, he attempt to write big words using phonics. For example, I came home one day a few months ago and he had written on his dry erase board ââ¬Å"I see a red ladebugâ⬠. He also brought home a worksheet that he had written about his favorite fruits. On this worksheet, he had written ââ¬Å"watrmlonâ⬠. As far as his math goes, he is always measuring things in the house with a kidââ¬â¢s yard ruler. The themes that they work on each month give the students the ability to know what is going on in the world around them. My son came home from school one day and told me that there was a planet that was not considered a planet anymore. I did not know this and I was in complete awe. According to Debra Ackerman, ââ¬Å"Children in full day kindergarten programs score higher on their achievement test than those in half-day programs. Full-day kindergarten advocates suggest that a longer school day provides educational support that ensures a productive beginning school experience and increases the chances of future school success. In both full-day and half-day programs, kindergartners spend most of their class time working on reading, language arts, and math activities, but the total number of minutes teachers devote to specific subjects differs. For example, 80 percent of full day but only about 50 percent of half-day programs devote more than 30 minutes each day to mathematics instruction. Sixty-eight percent of full day but only 37 percent of half-day classrooms dedicate at least 60 minutes to reading instruction each day. Perhaps most striking, 79 percent of full-day teachers read aloud to their students every day, compared to 62 percent of half-day teachers. Reading aloud is a critical activity in helping to develop childrenââ¬â¢s reading skills. Additional research shows childrenââ¬â¢s literacy learning is enhanced in full-day programs, as the full-day schedule provides a more intensive, ongoing, enriched language and literacy experience for the young child. â⬠(Ackerman) Children in full day kindergarten programs score higher on their achievement test than those in half-day programs. I asked my sonââ¬â¢s kindergarten teacher, Ms. Janssen, what the average for reading was for her class. Ms. Janssen stated that the majority of her students are already in the first grade reading level as of the end of the second trimester. As said by the Indiana Association of Public School Super Intendants, ââ¬Å"Full day kindergarten programs are associated with greater reading achievement gains during the kindergarten year than half day programsâ⬠. (Plucker, 6) The students are graded on their writing and math abilities as well. According to the Kalamazoo Public Schools reports, ââ¬Å"The group of kindergartners advanced in 2010 to first grade at Kalamazoo Public School, where 60 percent tested at or above the 50th percentile in reading on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills last April. Thatââ¬â¢s a 7-point increase compared to Kalamazoo Public School first-graders tested in April 2009, Rice said. On the Iowa Test Basic Skills math test, 52 percent of first-graders tested at or above the 50th percentile last spring, a 12-point jump over spring 2009. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills are administered in schools nationwide and is a norm-referenced test, which means scores are based on how students perform compared to other test-takers. The Kalamazoo Public School results show that 60 percent of Kalamazoo students are in the top half of first-graders nationwide in reading and 52 percent are in the top half in math. â⬠(Mack) Children who are in full day kindergarten have better social and behavioral effects than those who are in half-day kindergarten. When children are in school for the full day they have more time to get to know the other students. They get more time to interact together socially and they are learning while they are interacting. The students also get to go to specialists and they go with their classmates. Some of the specialists that Hayes Elementary offers are music, art, Spanish, and gym. Going to the specialist is something that the full day kindergarteners get to do and the half-day kindergarteners do not get to do. These students also get to spend more time with the teacher. This means that they will be less hesitant to approach their teacher. According to Clark, ââ¬Å"Some researchers have examined social and behavioral effects. According to researchers, a clear relationship emerged between the kindergarten schedule and childrenââ¬â¢s behavior. Teachers rated children in all-day kindergarten programs higher on 9 of the 14 dimensions; there were no significant differences on the other 5 dimensions. Other researchers who have studied social and behavioral outcomes found that children in all-day kindergarten programs were engaged in more child-to-child interactions and they made significantly greater progress in learning social skillsâ⬠. (Clark) In the kindergarten classrooms of Hayes Elementary, the students get into groups called centers. During this center time, the teacher takes a group of five students to a table to do independent reading and the rest of the students go to a center. The centers are groups of three or four students and the students get to interact socially while doing something educational. Some examples of the centers are writing center, listening center, leapster center, and art center. The writing center is where the students can write freely. The listening center is where the students put on headphones, listen to directions, and write down what they hear. The leapster center is where the students get to play a handheld learning game that integrates math, reading, and spelling in the games. Finally, the art center is where the students get to draw and color what they want. When the time is up the students clean up as groups. A full day of learning offers many social and emotional benefits to kindergarteners. As stated by NEA, ââ¬Å"They have more time to focus and reflect on activities, and they have more time to transition between activities. When children are taught by qualified teachers, using age-appropriate curricula in small classes they can take full advantage of the additional learning timeââ¬âsocial, emotional, and intellectualââ¬â that a full day allows. Further, research finds that children adjust well to the full-day format. â⬠(NEA) The full day kindergarten teachers plan and use the extra time in class well. The time in class is spent differently in both the full day kindergarten and the half-day kindergarten. According to the research that the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, ââ¬Å"The research provides evidence that time in full day kindergarten programs is different both quantitatively and qualitatively from how time is used in half day programsâ⬠(Plucker, ii). Full day kindergarten offers benefits to teachers. Teachers prefer the full day program to the half-day program. If there is a child that is struggling with something, the teacher has the ability to find time to help that student. There is also more time to finish activities. According to Ms. Janssen, ââ¬Å"With the full day program I am able to get through four reading groups versus two reading groups in one day. With the full day program we are able to go more in depth on our unit that we focus on in class. â⬠(Janssen) According to the NEA, ââ¬Å"Switching to full-day kindergarten gave teachers more time to plan the curriculum, incorporate a greater number of thematic units into the school year, and offer more in-depth coverage of each unit. â⬠(NEA) In the half-day programs there is less time for multiple activities. According to Dr. Martinez, ââ¬Å"Many kindergarten teachers favor full day kindergarten because they find it difficult to balance cognitive activities and affective social activities in the short kindergarten day. â⬠(Martinez, 2) Teachers also prefer full day kindergarten because there is more instructional time than that of a half-day kindergarten program. As stated by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, ââ¬Å" Across all of the schools in the Indiana sample, the proportion of instructional time is similar across program types, resulting in much greater instructional time in full day programs, representing approximately 40-50% more instruction in full day programs than half-day programsâ⬠. (Plucker, ii) Teachers also have the benefit of getting to know the students and their parents better. According to Dr. Martinez, ââ¬Å"Teachers state that they have a chance to know children and parents better, to do more individualization of instruction, and to expand the curriculum horizontally. â⬠(Dr. Martinez) There are so many benefits for the children. A very important benefit is that the full day kindergarteners have the opportunity to an easier transition into the first grade because they are already used to the full day schedule. The time that the students get to spend with the teacher is a great benefit as well. The extra time that is spent with the teacher is as much beneficial for the teacher as it is for the students. According to the research from Dr. Martinez, ââ¬Å"Teachers thought children developed closer relationships and were more relaxed in the full-day program and felt more a part of the school. Teachers indicated they were able to give more individual attention to students and that children had more time to develop both academic and socialization skills. Teachers noted they could work more on the continuing development of each child and felt children showed more advancement. Teachers indicated they felt closer to the children and that they got to know both child and family better. Some indicated in the full day they felt more flexible, were more relaxed and spontaneous, and felt better prepared to meet with parents. â⬠(Dr. Martinez, 6) The time that the students get to spend on activities is another great benefit. According to NEA, ââ¬Å"in a study evaluating teachersââ¬â¢ views on full-day kindergarten, teachers reported a number of benefits for themselves as well as children and parents. Participating in full day eased the transition to first grade, helping children adapt to the demand of a six-hour day. Having more time available in the school day offered more flexibility and more time to do activities during free choice times. Having more time actually made the kindergarten program less stressful and frustrating for children because they had time to fully develop an interest in activities. Participating inà the full-day schedule allows more appropriate academic challenges for children at all developmental levels. Children with developmental delays or those at risk for school problems benefited from having more time to complete projects and more time for needed socialization with peers and teachers. â⬠(NEA) Full day kindergarten offers more benefits to the students that are at risk and children that come from educational and economical disadvantaged homes. If the full day kindergarten programs cost money, as most do, they cost around 3000 dollars per child for the year. The 3000 dollars is charged to the parents of the child. The children that come from the educationally and economically disadvantaged homes would not be able to attend because of the cost. These children are the ones that benefit from the program the most. According to the Indiana Superintendents, ââ¬Å"Students at or below the poverty level enrolled in full day kindergarten scored statistically significantly higher in math and reading than their half day counterparts. Poor children enrolled in full day kindergarten programs tested statistically significantly above half day pupils on reading, spatial, and verbal skills, naming colors and letters, and identifying numerals. â⬠(Plucker, 6) Parents prefer full day kindergarten as well. I as a mother prefer the full day kindergarten program to the half-day program. One of the advantages is that I do not have to figure out childcare and who would bring my son to the childcare. Trying to figure out childcare and school between my job schedule would be undesirable. As said by Dr. Martinez, ââ¬Å"Full-day kindergarten saves parents day-care problems, while providing children a comprehensive, developmentally-appropriate program. Parents said that children often feel more stress when they have to go from a school situation to a day-care environment, where different rules and philosophies apply. Therefore, parents favor a full-day program, which reduces the number of transitions kindergartners experience in a typical day. â⬠(Dr. Martinez) Full day kindergarten also takes a huge cost out of many parentsââ¬â¢ monthly budget including mine. Even though some people would be against this and say, ââ¬Å"Why would I have to pay for your childcare? â⬠I would say that many parents including myself pay taxes too. Their parents wanted them to have the best education that they could have gotten. Most importantly, I know that my son and many other children are getting the best out of their day while they are in school. They are having fun while they are learning. My son enjoys being in school. If he had a choice, he would go on Saturdays and Sundays. Children attending full day kindergarten spend the day learning instead of watching television or playing video games. Full-day kindergarten provides parents with better support for their children. According to NEA, ââ¬Å"For parents who work outside the home, full-day kindergarten means that children do not have to be shuffled between home, school, and childcare. For all parents, there is more continuity and less disruption in the childââ¬â¢s day and more time for focused and independent learning. One study of parent attitudes found that after the second year of a full-day kindergarten program, 100 percent of full-day parents, and 72 percent of half-day parents noted that, if given the opportunity again, they would have chosen full-day kindergarten for their childâ⬠. (NEA) In conclusion, having full day kindergarten should be mandatory. There are many benefits of the full day kindergarten program. The benefits are not limited to the students. Teachers and parents also get great benefits out of the full day program. According to MaryBeth, ââ¬Å"Research has shown that it is important to begin learning early in life. School systems that have implemented the academically based full day kindergarten are finding it to be successful. â⬠(Calvin) If I had to choose again if a child of mine was going to go to full day or half-day kindergarten, I would not even have to think twice.
